Babeland is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month. That means, when Babeland first opened its doors I was five years old and had just had my first comprehensive sex education experience. Luckily for me, my mother worked at Planned Parenthood in the 70s and was very no-nonsense about it all when I asked about sex, after bathtime. Luckily for me, by the time Babeland celebrated its tenth anniversary, I had condoms in my dresser and a dog eared copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves on my bookshelf. When I went to sleepaway camp that year, I drew a big picture of a vulva for my bunk, to demonstrate the existence and location of the clitoris. Yes, I was that girl.
Now, 20 years into Babeland's existence, I am working as the Workshop Coordinator, which means that I get to write curricula, teach, and train a new crop of sex educators. My position here means I never forget how important Babeland's existence is -- every day I speak to people who are shopping for their first ever vibrator, people who have never had orgasms, people who don't have the words to describe what kind of stimulation they like. Every day I speak to people who think using lube is an admission of physical defect, who are afraid to talk to their partners about their desires, who want to put things in their butts but have no idea where to even begin. It's no wonder, too; comprehensive, pleasure-based sex education is absent from most curricula in this country. That's why we're here.
That is to say, come chat. We've been doling out sex advice since Jurassic Park was in theaters. Happy 20th, Babeland, and here's to many more!
